Kurdish Language
Kurdish is a West Iranian language. It is spoken in Kurdistan. It ranks as the third largest Iranian language group, following Persian and Pashto.
Kurdish has numerous dialects. The two main dialect groups are Kurmanji and Kurdi (also called Sorani). Kurmanji is the northern group, and is spoken in the area stretching from Mosul, Iraq to the Caucasus. Kurdi, the second group, is spoken in a vast region spanning from Orumiyeh, Iran, to the southern regions of Kurdistan in Iraq.
Kurdi is the basis for literary Kurdish, and is also the official form of Kurdish in Iraq.
