Turkman Language

Turkmen is a member of the southwestern, or Oguz, division of the Turkic subfamily of Altaic languages. Turkmen is spoken in Turkmenistan, as well as adjacent parts of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and, to a lesser extent, in Afghanistan and Iran.

Before 1927, written Turkmen used an Arabic alphabet. Currently, the language now uses a modified Latin alphabet.

The Turkmen literary tradition developed during the 18th and 19th centuries.
