Turkish Language

Turkish is used as the official language of the Turkish Republic and is the mother tongue of ninety percent of Turkey’s inhabitants.  Turkish-speakers number some 53,000,000 within Turkey itself; 1,800,000 in Germany; 700,000 in other western European countries; 1,000,000 in the Balkan states; 400,000 in Iran; 150,000 in Cyprus; and 100,000 in Uzbekistan. 

Turkish is a member of the Turkic language family, which is a subfamily of the Altaic family.

Turkish belongs to the Southwestern, or Oguz, group of Common Turkic languages—a group that also includes Azerbaijani (spoken in Northern Iran and Azerbaijan), Turkmen (spoken in Turkmenistan), and Gagauz (spoken in Moldova).
