Swahili

Swahili Language

Swahili (also called kiSwahili, or Kiswahili) is part of the Bantu language subgroup in the Benue-Congo branch of the Niger-Congo family of languages.

Swahili is spoken both as a native and second language by people located on the east coast of Africa.  Geographically, speakers range from Lamu Island, to Kenya, to the southern border of Tanzania.

There are about 15 Swahili dialects in use, in addition to many pidgin forms. The three most important dialects are kiUnguja (or Kiunguja), kiMvita (or Kimvita), and kiAmu (or Kiamu).  Standard Swahili is based on the kiUnguja dialect.
