Russian Language

Russian is used as the official language of the Russian Federation, and as one of the official languages of the Commonwealth of Independent States.  Approximately 160 million people speak Russian as a mother tongue in countries that formerly belonged to the Soviet Union.

As a second language, Russian is spoken by additional millions of people from non-Russian ancestry; their political or economic relations with native Russian-speakers were, or remain, of key importance. 

The territory in which Russian is spoken, either as a mother tongue or as a common second or third language, includes not only the territory of the former Soviet Union, but also neighboring countries of eastern Europe and the Third World that were formerly part of, or aligned with, the so-called Soviet Bloc.
