Mandarin Language

Mandarin (also called Northern Chinese, Chinese [Pinyin] Guanhua [“Officials' Language”], or [Wade-Giles romanization] Kuan-hua) is the most widely spoken version of the Chinese language.  It is the native language of two-thirds of China’s population.  Geographically, it is spoken everywhere in China north of the Yangtze River, and in many places throughout the rest of the country.

Mandarin Chinese is commonly divided into regional subgroups:  Northern Mandarin, Northwestern Mandarin, Southwestern Mandarin, and Southern (or Lower Yangtze) Mandarin.

Modern Standard Chinese is based on the form of Mandarin spoken around Beijing.  The Chinese commonly refer to this as putonghua, or “common language.”

Mandarin has approximately 867 million speakers worldwide.
