Malay Language
Malay belongs to the Western, or Indonesian, branch of the Austronesian language family. It is the native language of more than 33 million people residing in the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, and several nearby smaller islands.
Malay is also a widely used second language in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Malay has many dialects, but the dialect of the southern Malay Peninsula is arguably the most important. This dialect is the basis of both standard Malay and the official language of the Republic of Indonesia, known as Bahasa Indonesia.
