Lithuanian Language

Lithuanian (Lietuviu Kalba) is an East Baltic language that is closely related to Latvian.  It has been the official language of Lithuania since 1918.

Lithuanian is the most archaic Indo-European language currently spoken.

A literary form of Lithuanian has been in existence since the 16th century.  Used solely for religious writings, this form differs greatly from modern standard Lithuanian in grammar, vocabulary, and syntax.  It also shows more influence from Slavic languages than does modern Lithuanian.

Modern standard Lithuanian is written in a 32-letter Latin alphabet.  The language is based on the West High Lithuanian dialect of Jonas Jablonskis, a scholar who is considered to be its founder.
