Korean Language

Korean is spoken by more than 72 million people worldwide. Approximately 24 million speakers live in North Korea, and around 45 million live in South Korea.

Korean speakers can also be found in several other countries.  There are more than 2 million in China, a small, indeterminate amount in Japan, and more than 700,000 in the United States.  In addition, more than 200,000 Koreans inhabit Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Korean is the official language of North and South Korea.  While each country differs in matters of alphabetization, spelling, and vocabulary, both countries endorse the basic standards set forth by the Korean Language Society in 1933.  Thus, both versions of the language are mutually intelligible.
