Icelandic Language

Icelandic (Islensk) is a member of the West Scandinavian group of North Germanic languages.  It is the national language of Iceland.

The Old Iceland language of the Middle Ages is commonly referred to as “Old Norse.”

In terms of grammar, orthography, and vocabulary, the Icelandic language has changed very little since the Old Norse period.  It still has three genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter), four noun cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative), many declensions, and intricate pronoun and verb systems.  As a result, Icelandic speakers of today are able to read Old Icelandic literature with ease.  

Icelandic pronunciation, however, has changed drastically since classical times.
