Finnish Language

Finnish (Finnish Suomi) is the official language of Finland.

Finnish belongs to the Baltic-Finnic branch of the Finno-Ugric group in the Uralic language family.  Of this branch, Finnish is most closely related to Estonian, Ingrian, Karelian, Livonian, Veps, and Votic. These languages share several characteristics, including two distinguished lengths in vowels and in consonants, and loanwords from the Baltic languages, German, and Russian.

Finnish literary tradition dates from the 16th century, when the New Testament was translated into Finnish by Lutheran bishop Mikael Agricola.
