Breton

Our professional linguists include native Breton speakers who are experienced in the nuances of the language and the requirements of effective translation and interpreting.

Breton Language

Breton (Breiz) belongs to the Brythonic group of Celtic languages.

Breton is spoken in Brittany in northwestern France.  The language was introduced to France in the 5th century by Brythonic Celtic refugees from southern England.

The Breton language is most closely related to Cornish and Welsh, but has been strongly influenced by French.

Breton has four major dialects: Léon, Tréguier, Cornouaille, and Vannes.

Despite efforts to encourage Breton’s development as a literary language, the French government encourages the use of French rather than Breton.  As a result, the number of Breton speakers is diminishing.
