6 Tips for Learning Another Language

Learning another language is an exhilarating trip into a new world – and it can take some time and effort to get there.

Luckily, there are a few easy ways to make your adventure go a lot more smoothly. Making your own materials, watching films, and chatting with friends are all ways you can learn another language – and have a great time doing it!

Start learning another language with these 6 helpful tips:

1) Learn a little every day.

One of the keys to learning another language is practicing a little bit every day. Reserve an hour to practice each day and stick to your schedule.

Studying for long periods can wear you out and limit your focus.  Starting with small but regular sessions is the best way to keep your grammar and vocabulary fresh in your mind. Eventually they’ll just come naturally!

2) Customize your materials.

Whether you’re studying from books, audio tapes or video programs, making your own study materials will make learning another language easier – and more fun!

Write new words on flash cards, draw up charts to remember verb conjugations, or make your own phrase book with your favorite terms.

Learning another language actively, instead of flipping through a book, will help the information sink in. Plus, you can personalize your materials to fit your needs and your interests.

3) Practice out loud.

Get a feel for the language by saying words and phrases out loud while you practice. Pronunciation is key to learning another language – and to making yourself understood by native speakers!

Read sentences aloud from books or magazines in the language you’re studying, or just read over your grammar exercises while you’re practicing. You’ll start to get used to the way the new words sound and feel.

4) Close the books.

From films to international websites, there are dozens of ways to encounter other languages in the real world. Remember to explore some of them when you’re learning another language.

Listen to international radio stations – many of them are streaming over the internet – or look up the websites of newspapers in the language you’re studying. You can keep learning another language while surfing the web or having a movie night with your friends!

5) Call a friend.

One of the best ways to learn another language is to strike up a conversation with someone else. If some of your friends are learning the same language – or, even better, if they’re native speakers! – ask them to help you out.

It can be tempting to fall back into your first language, but try to stay on track! If you can’t think of the right word, describe it using other words that you know. You can keep a list of vocabulary to look up afterward.

6) Keep it up!

Learning another language takes determination and perseverance, so keep practicing! Remember to review the basics as well as new vocabulary and grammar, since everything you learn will build on the foundation you started with.

Luckily, you have a great reason to keep up the hard work. Learning another language can broaden your horizons and introduce you to new people and parts of the world.
